并列连词(coordinating conjunction)主要是用来表示并列关系、转折关系、选择关系、因果推理关系等。并列连词用来连接属于同一层次并具有相同句法功能的词；短语或句子。

（1）引导并列关系的

Tom likes football and tennis .（足球football和网球tennis是并列的）。

Both Jane and Jim are interested in pop music.（ 简和吉姆对流行音乐都很感兴趣）。

2)both…and两者都

She likes to play both the piano and the guitar.

3)not only…but (also), as well as不但…而且）

She plays not only the piano, but (also) the guitar.

not only…but also关联两个分句时，一个分句因有否定词not而必须倒装。

Not only does he like reading stories, but also he can even write some.

注意 ：as well as与not only... but also...

名词+as well as+名词作主语时，强调前面的名词，谓语动词要根据前面的名词而定。not only...but also...连接名词作主语时，其强调在后者，谓语动词要根据后面的名词而定。

4)neithe…nor意思为"既不……也不……"谓语动词采用就近原则，与nor后的词保持一致。

Neither you nor he likes play chess。

（2）表示选择的关系

1）or意思为"否则"。I must work hard, or I'll fail in the exam.

2）Would you like milk or coffee ? （牛奶和咖啡是并列的，表示选择）

3) either…or意思为"或者……或者……"。注意谓语动词采用就近原则。

Either you or I have had read the book。

注意：or 与 either...or...

or表示为“否则”的话，前句一般是祈使句，后句用一般将来时。在表示选择关系时or 与 either...or... 用法相同，但 either...or...更具强调性。在多个对象进行选择时，可以用A or B or C... , either A or B or C... , neither A or B or C... 

（3）表示转折或对比

1) but表示转折，while表示对比。

Some people love cats, while others hate them.

--- Would you like to come to dinner tonight?--- I'd like to, __But_ I'm too busy.

but与前面形成转折，符合语意。而表并列的and， 结果的so，原因的as都不符合句意。

2) not…but… 意思为"不是……而是……"  not和but后面的用词要遵循一致原则。

They were not the bones of an animal, but (the bones) of a human being.
