英语词汇“bottom line”的用法解析

Bottom line的意思是底线，表示最低的限度，与中文“底线”的意义多有重合，然而bottom line是否等同于“底线”呢？“底线”一词经常用于日常生活中，比如，"接收和医治SARS病人的底线是6000人。" "坚持一个中国原则是我们的底线。"……“底线”一般表示基本标准或准则，极限能力或条件，基本立场和原则。

bottom line原是指英语财务报表的最底行的盈亏数目，后来延伸引用为表示"最起码的条件" "可接受的最低价格”,因此通常情况下可以把“底线”翻译为bottom line.但是有几种情况不能把中文中的“底线”译为bottom line。 比如标示某些球类运动场地两端相对与"边线"的"底线",一般篮球和足球的“底线”是back line/end line;足球是goal line；羽毛球和网球是base line.
