特殊的英语习语的运用

英汉民族由于所处的地理位置不同、生活方式有异而形成各具特点的习语。为了方便大家更好的理解掌握并且运用地道又富有特色和充满趣味的英语习语。

英语中产生了大量的习语。如：to go with the stream随波逐流，to take the ropes了如指掌，to trim one’sails to the wind随机应变，nail one’S colors to the ma坚持到底等等。

英语中有不少用鱼来比喻人的习语：a poor fish可怜的家伙，a cold fish冷淡的人，queer fish怪人，a shy fish羞答答的家伙等…。这些语言更多的是表达关于人的一些性格或者品质有关的，然而老外们非常不喜欢别人来judge他们的为人处世，所以这些词汇要少用······

1、a grain of salt ， 意思是是给点盐吗？肯定不是的·········

（1）Uncle Bill tells some stories, but we take what he says with a grain of salt because he sometimes likes to exaggerate or makes things up.   比尔大叔讲了好些事情，不过对他所说的要有所保留，有时他喜欢把事情夸大。

（2）This is only a sort of handout. You may take it with a grain of salt.   这只是一份分发的资料，你大可以不必相信。

2、paint the town red,感到很不解，怎么要把“城市刷成红色”？ 在年轻人中很流行的一句俚语，意思是“go out and have a really exciting, crazy time”。

Wiktionary给出的解释是：To party or celebrate in a rowdy wild manner, expecially in a public place.

意思是“到城里去狂玩’，“出去痛快地玩”，尤指晚上到闹区、公共场，所去喝酒、跳舞、唱歌、享受都市夜生活。paint the town red是一种夸张的说法，译成汉语意思，可译成“狂玩”、“玩个痛快”、“狂欢庆祝”、“饮酒作乐”、“热闹一番”等等。

（1）It's Ian's birthday so he's going out with some friends tonight to paint the town red. 今天是伊恩的生日，今晚他与他的朋友们一起出去狂欢庆祝了。

（2）We're heading out to paint the town red tonight, so don't forget to bring plenty of cash. 今晚我们出去狂玩，别忘了多带点现金。

3、人生活为了什么？首先人活着最基本的肯定是需要“养家糊口”维持基本生计的。那么老外们怎么样表达维持生计呢？

（1）Balance the books结账、结算

determine  that accounts are in balance, bring the two sides into equilibrium, settle an account by paying what is due  确定账户处于平衡状态，力求平衡，通过支付到期款来结算账户

The accountant says he can’t balance the books till our last check clears.   会计说上次的票款清理后才能给我们结账。

（2）Bring home the bacon   养家糊口

earn a salary, make money for your family  挣钱养家

When our parents died in an accident, and my sister and I remained alone, I had to leave college and bring home the bacon.父母意外死亡时，我和妹妹还没成家。所以我不得不辍学养家。

3、to be led by the nose。To be led by the nose是一种很不愉快的经历。它的意思就是一个人全部在别人的控制之下，就像一头牲口被人用绳子牵着鼻子走一样。那末to be led by the nose在一般情况下的用法是怎么样的呢？

Ed's wife is a strong-minded woman and leads him around by the nose. 这句话的意思是："埃德的太太是一个个性很强的人，埃德简直就是被她牵着鼻子走。

4、take the point。Take the point也可以说成walk the point。这个短语本来是军事用语，意思是“担任前哨或尖兵”。每当巡逻队出动执行任务的时候，总会有一名士兵远远走在前面。这名士兵就是在take the point或者walk the point。

不管是谁担任前哨或尖兵，这个人都得有勇气和胆量，如果前面有埋伏的敌人，子弹肯定会首先射向他。但是这样就等于是给后面的战友发出了警报，让他们知道前面有敌军埋伏。

take the point作为习惯用语被政界和商界借用，引申为“敢于一马当先为众人出面”。

Everybody was afraid to bring the subject up. But Betty volunteered to take the point and talk to the Boss for us all. I'm afraid she has more courage than the rest of us combined。家都不敢开口提这事，但是贝蒂却自告奋勇，要为我们出面跟老板谈谈。贝蒂比我们所有人加起来都勇敢。
