1.  terrify: to make someone feel very frightened

例：

The idea of going down into the caves terrified her.（想到要深入洞穴，她很害怕。）

The teacher terrified her so much that she hated going to school.（她很怕老师，所以很讨厌上学。）

My uncle suffers from agoraphobia, and the idea of leaving the house terrifies him.（我叔叔患有陌生环境恐惧症，想到要出门，他就很害怕。）

it terrifies somebody to think/know etc.

It terrified him to think that, in six months' time, he would have to stand up in front of a class and teach them something.（一想到6个月后他就要站上讲台教书，他就很害怕。）

2. give somebody a fright: to make someone suddenly feel frightened so that they make a sudden movement or their heart starts beating quickly

例：

He really gave me a fright when he phoned at that time of night.（他晚上那个点打电话来，真吓了我一跳。）

When you jumped out from behind the door it gave me such a fright!（你从门后跳出来，真吓了我一跳！）

give somebody a hell of a fright (=make someone suddenly very frightened)（备注：''give somebody a hell of a fright''较口语化）

I accidentally touched a live wire in the motor, and even though it didn't hurt me it gave me a hell of a fright.（不小心碰到引擎上一根带电的电线，虽然没受伤，但我吓了一跳。）

3. alarm: to make people feel very worried about a possible danger

例：

We don't wish to alarm people unnecessarily, but it would be wise to avoid drinking the tap water here.（我们不想无谓地吓唬人，但在这儿不喝自来水是明智之举。）

Many women are alarmed by suggestions of a link between the contraceptive pill and breast cancer.（很多妇女都被警告说，避孕药会导致乳癌。）

The rapid spread of the disease has alarmed many people.（疾病迅速传播，大家很害怕。）

4. startle: if someone or something startles you, they frighten you because you see them suddenly or hear them when you did not know they were there

例：

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to startle you.（抱歉，我不是故意吓你的。）

The noise startled him, and he dropped his glass on the floor.（这响声把他吓了一跳，眼镜都掉地上了。）

She was startled into wakefulness by a loud noise.（一声巨响把她吓醒了。）

Any unexpected movements can startle the animal, so it must be approached slowly and steadily.（任何风吹草动都会惊到这个小动物，所以一定要稳稳地、慢慢地走近它。）

5. make somebody jump: to suddenly surprise and frighten someone so that they make a sudden movement

例：

Sorry! I didn't mean to make you jump.（抱歉，我不是故意要吓你一跳。）

Something darted out from behind the hedge and made me jump.（树丛后有东西窜出来，吓了我一跳。）

6. the creeps: if a person or a place gives you the creeps or you get the creeps, they make you feel slightly frightened and nervous because they are strange

例：

This house gives me the creeps - it's so dark and quiet.（这所房子好黑好安静，我心里有点毛毛的。）

I hate being left alone in the office with Tom - he gives me the creeps.（我不喜欢跟汤姆单独呆在一间办公室，我有点儿怕他。）

I get the creeps every time he walks by.（每次经过他身边，我心里都有点毛毛的。）

与''give somebody the creeps/get the creeps''类似的还有''creep out''。

例：

That guy really creeps me out.（我看到那个人，心里真有点毛毛的。）

I felt crept out being alone in the office at night.（晚上一个人在办公室，心里毛毛的。）
