1. a cut above : clearly better than others of the same type

备注: ''a cut above'' 是非正式的用法。

例:

The movie is a cut above recent thrillers. (这部电影比最近上映的那些惊悚片好得多。)

Musicians of the time admitted that the Ellington Orchestra was a cut above all others. (当代的音乐家都说艾灵顿管弦乐队明显比其他管弦乐队好。)

She is a cut above the other competitors and should win easily. (她明显强于其他竞争对手,应该很容易赢。)

a cut above the rest

The first applicant we interviewed was definitely a cut above the rest. (我们面试的第一个应聘者明显比其他应聘者好。)

All of his books are good, but this one is a cut above the rest. (他的书都不错,这本明显最好。)

 

2. have the edge on/over : to be better than something or someone else; to have an advantage over something or someone else

例:

Federer is likely to have the edge in Sunday's game. (周日的比赛,费德勒可能更有优势。)

have the edge on/over something

For me, this film has the edge over the others. (对我来说,这部电影最好。)

have the edge on/over somebody

The company still has an edge over its competitors. (跟对手相比,该公司还是占有优势。)

 

3. have an advantage over : to be better, more effective, and more useful than something else, especially because of a particular feature

例:

have an advantage over something

This printer has several advantages over conventional printers. (比起传统打印机,这台打印机有一些优势。)

 

4. be more than a match for : to be much more skillful and more successful at doing something than someone else

例:

be more than a match for somebody

He was more than a match for his opponent. (他比对手厉害。)

When it comes to TV debates, Senator White is more than a match for any of his rivals. (说到电视辩论环节,怀特议员比其他议员都厉害。)

be more than a match for something

The rebel army's tactics are more than a match for the nation's military forces. (叛军的战略部署比政府军还好。)

备注:这里的 ''match'' 指的是“旗鼓相当的对手”,类似用法还有 ''no match for somebody'' ''be one's match'' ''meet one's match''

例:

He was no match for his opponent. (他不如对手厉害。)

She' s his match when it comes to chess. (下国际象棋的话,他俩棋逢敌手。)

She knew after the first game that she had met her match . (第一场比赛结束后,她就知道自己遇到对手了。)

 

5. special : better than something of the usual type, for example by being more enjoyable, more useful, or of higher quality

例:

I don't want an ordinary wedding. I want something special. (我不想婚礼太普通,想办个特别的婚礼。)

 

6. preferable : more suitable or useful - used when saying which one you prefer

备注: ''preferable'' 是正式的用法。

例:

Cash would be preferable. (付现金更好。)

For this dish, fresh herbs and garlic are preferable. (这道菜用新鲜香草和蒜头更好。)

In warm weather, clothes made of natural fabrics are infinitely preferable (= much better ) . (天热的时候,穿着纯天然织物更舒服。)

preferable to (doing) something

Being taught in a small group is far preferable to being in a large, noisy classroom. (小班教学比拥挤吵闹的大班教学要好太多。)
