1. within walking/driving etc. distance : if a place is within walking distance, it is not far away, and you can walk there easily

例:

There are several good restaurants within walking distance. (离这儿不远处有几家很好吃的餐馆,从这儿走路过去就能到。)

within walking/driving etc. distance of

Dr White lived within walking distance of the University. (怀特医生住在离这个大学不远处,从这个大学出发走路就能到。)

There are plenty of bars and restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. (这家酒店周边有很多酒吧和餐馆。)

The job was not within driving distance of my home. (单位离我家不是非常近。)

within easy walking/driving etc. distance (of something)

The park is within easy walk distance. (公园很近,走路就能到。)

Fortunately the house that we were renting was within easy driving distance of the shops. (还好,我们租的房子离这些店很近。)

补充:常用的还有 ''within striking distance'', ''within spitting distance'' 等。

within striking distance: close enough to reach a place easily; very close to achieving something

例:

By now, they were within striking distance of the shore. (现在,他们到了离海边很近的地方。)

The French team are within striking distance of the world record. (法国队差点就破了世界纪录。)

within spitting distance: very close to someone or something

备注: ''within spitting distance'' 常用于口语中。

例:

The ball passed within spitting distance of the goal. (球差一点就进了。)

 

2. within reach : near enough to a town or place for you to get there without too much difficulty; within the distance that you can stretch out your arm to touch something

例:

Keep a glass of water within reach. (在手边放一杯水。)

within reach of

It was just lucky that we were within reach of a hospital. (我们离医院这么近,真是万幸。)

within easy reach (=near enough to get to easily)

Around Salzburg there are literally dozens of exciting places to visit - all within easy reach. (萨尔斯堡周边有很多好地方可以去,并且都离萨尔斯堡很近。)

The beach is within easy reach of the hotel. (这家酒店离海边很近。)

 

3. convenient/handy for something : if your home, office etc is convenient for or handy for a particular place, that place is near it and easy to reach

备注: ''convenient/handy for something'' 常用于英式英语中,美式英语中常作 ''convenient to something''

例:

The bus stop around the corner is probably the most convenient. (转角那个车站可能是最近的车站了。)

restaurants convenient for shops and theaters (离商店和剧场很近的餐馆)

The place where we live now is very convenient for the school - it's only a couple of minutes on foot. (我们现在住的地方离学校很近,走路只要几分钟就到了。)

The house was in Drury Lane, very handy for the theater. (这个房子就在居瑞巷,离剧场很近。)

My husband works in London so we're looking for a house that's handy for the station. (我老公在伦敦上班,所以我们想找个离车站近的房子住。)

We found an apartment convenient to campus and public transportation. (我们找了个离学校和车站都很近的公寓。)

 

4. in your own backyard : near the place where you live - use this especially when talking about something that you do not want there

备注: ''in your own backyard'' 常用于非正式的场合。

例:

Most people want the new airport so long as it isn't in their own backyard. (只要新机场不建在自己家附近,大部分人都没话说了,都希望新机场能建起来。)
