令人感到失望,英语怎么表达?

 

1. disappointing : something that is disappointing makes you feel unhappy or dissatisfied, because it is not as good as you hoped it would be

例:

The team had a disappointing season. (这个赛季,球队的表现让人失望。)

Company profits this year have been very disappointing. (今年公司利润不好,让人失望。)

 

2. be a disappointment : something that is a disappointment does not happen in the way you hoped, or is not as good as you expected

例:

The holiday was a bit of a disappointment - it rained the whole time. (假期一直下雨,让人有点失望。)

The election results were a disappointment to civil rights groups. (对民权组织来说,竞选结果让人失望。)

It was a great disappointment to my parents that I didn't go to university. (我没上大学,令我父母深感失望。)

 

3. disappoint : v.

例:

The band disappointed thousands of fans by canceling the concert at the last minute. (乐队在最后时刻取消了演唱会,让无数粉丝失望。)

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but there aren't any tickets left. (很抱歉地告诉您,票都卖完了。)

The novel disappoints by being predictable and overly long. (这小说太长,而且情节老套,让人失望。)

 

4. not live up to (somebody's) expectations : if an event or person does not live up to expectations, you expected them to be very good but in fact they are not

例:

Their vacation didn't live up to their expectations. (这个假期叫他们失望了。)

I'm afraid as a husband I never really lived up to Kelly's expectations. (作为丈夫,恐怕我从来没让凯利真正满意过。)

Despite the enormous cost of making it, the film didn't live up to expectations. (虽然花了大成本制作,这部电影还是叫人失望。)

I failed to live up to my parents' expectations, particularly at school. (我让我父母失望了,特别是我在学校的表现。)

 

5. let somebody down : to not do what you promised to do for someone, or not behave as well as they expected

例:

She had been let down badly in the past. (过去,她曾经很失望过。)

I said I would help them—I can't let them down. (我说过会帮忙,我不能让他们失望。)

The worst feeling is having let our fans down. (让我们的粉丝失望,这感觉最不好了。)

It is my fault we lost the game. I let the team down. (输了比赛都是我的错。我让全队失望了。)

He never lets down a friend in need. (朋友向他求助,他都会帮。)

Many disabled soldiers feel the government has let them down very badly. (很多残疾士兵觉得政府太让他们失望了。)

His judgment let him down. (他做了个错误的决定。)

The end of the story really let me down. (故事的结尾真叫人失望。)

补充: let somebody down easy/gently : to give someone unpleasant news in a gentle or kind way 慢慢地把不好的消息告诉某人

例:

She tried to let him down gently when she told him he didn't get the job. (她委婉地告诉他没被录用,尽量让他好受点。)

I knew I had to fire her, but I was trying to think of a way to let her down easy. (我知道一定得开除她,但是我试图想个法子,让她不要太伤心。)
