1. Ted: Can I count on you two to behave around Victoria? 我能指望你俩在维多利亚身边收敛一点吗?


解析:

count on: to expect someone to do something 指望某人做某事

例:

I wouldn't count on him to win the game. (我没指望他会赢。)

 

2. Ted: However, could we skip the traditional interrogation of the new girlfriend tonight? 今晚,我们能不能不要对新女友问东问西的?


解析:

1 skip: to not do something that you usually do or that you should do 

例:

He skipped the meeting.(=he didn't go to the meeting) (他没去开会。)

I skipped breakfast, and now I'm really hungry. (我没吃早饭,现在很饿。)

She skipped lunch in order to go shopping. (她为了去购物而没吃午饭。)

Williams skipped the game to be with his wife in the hospital. (威廉姆斯没去参加比赛,在医院陪他太太。)

skip school/class (常用于美式英语中)

He skipped chemistry class three times last month. (上个月,他旷了三节化学课。)

(2) interrogate: v. to ask someone a lot of questions for a long time in order to get information

interrogation: n. 审问

例:

He conducted a skillful interrogation of the witness. (他很有技巧地盘问了证人。)

 

3. Robin: Victoria's great. She's fun, she's free-spirited , she's great. 维多利亚人很不错。她很有趣,放得开,人也好。


解析:

free-spirited: thinking and acting in a free way without worrying about normal social rules 特立独行

例:

Their daughter is really free-spirited. (他们女儿真的很特立独行。)

补充:这里的 ''-spirited'' 表示 ''having a particular type of character'' ,可以跟不同的形容词搭配,如:

sweet-spirited, tough-spirited, rebellious-spirited etc.

 

4. Marshall: Okay, okay, no, no, we'll just start. You guys will pick it up . Newbie goes first. 好吧好吧,哦不不不,我们就直接开始吧,你们玩玩就明白了。新手先来。


解析:

(1) pick something up: to learn something usually in an informal way 非正式地习得

例:

He seems to pick foreign languages up very easily. (他学外语好像很容易似的。)

She uses a style of singing she picked up from listening to jazz music. (她的演唱方法是从爵士乐的磁带里听了学来的。)

He has been picking up some bad habits from his friends. (他从朋友那里学了些坏习惯回来。)

(2) newbie: someone who has just started doing something 初心者,新手

例:

She is a newbie on the Internet. (她才开始学着上网。)

a newbie chess player (刚开始学下棋的新手)

 

5. Marshall: Victoria, "Have you ever cheated while in a relationship?" Wow, good question. 维多利亚,“你有没有背叛过你的男朋友?”哇喔,好问题。

Victoria: Um, well, I was in a really crappy relationship in college, and I wound up kissing this guy at a party one night, and I felt terrible about it, so, I came clean , and we broke up. 大学时,我有一次糟糕的恋爱经历,在一次派对上,我亲了另一个男人,我感觉这样很不好,就跟男朋友坦白然后分手了。


解析:

(1) wind up: to be in an unpleasant situation or place after a lot has happened 发生很多事后处于一个不愉快的情景或地段中

备注: "wind" 的过去式是 "wound" "wind up=end up"

Although she studied art, she wound up working in publishing. (虽然她学的是艺术,最后却在出版界工作。)

(2) come clean: to finally tell the truth or admit that you have done something wrong 最终承认自己做错了

备注: "come clean" 常用于非正式的场合中。

例:

The bank eventually came clean and admitted they had made a mistake. (银行最后终于承认是他们弄错了。)

It's time the government came clean about its plans to raise income tax. (是时候该政府出面,承认提高个人所得税的政策不当了。)
