意料——出乎意料 (第一部分)

人生不能事事尽如人意,往往有出乎你意料的时候,看看英语怎么来表达这个意思吧。

 

1. unexpected : something that is unexpected surprises you because you did not expect it

例:

There have been unexpected delays on the freeway because of an accident. (因为一起事故,高速上意外出现堵车。)

This experiment produced some unexpected results. (实验结果有些出人意料。)

The story is full of unexpected twists. (这个故事充满戏剧性。)

I'm sad that she's leaving, but it was not unexpected. (她要离开了,我很伤心,但对于她的离开我已有预感。)

Drivers must always be prepared to deal with the unexpected. (司机必须随时准备好处理突发情况。)

completely/totally/entirely unexpected

Bobby's decision to leave the band was totally unexpected. (鲍比决定要离开乐队,这出乎所有人意料。)

Her announcement was not entirely unexpected. (她宣布的事大家已有预感。)

unexpectedly (adv.):

Guests arrived unexpectedly. (客人不请自来。)

His father died unexpectedly. (他父亲猝然长逝。)

Sales were unexpectedly high this month. (这个月销量出奇地好。)

 

2. unforeseen :

unforeseen circumstances/problems/changes etc. : situations, problems, changes etc. that you did not expect or prepare for, and which usually cause you difficulty

例:

We had to cancel our visit to Egypt because of unforeseen problems. (因为出了点意外,我们得取消埃及之行。)

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the play was canceled. (因为意外情况,这部剧取消了。)

Barring some unforeseen changes, we should finish on time. (如无意外,我们应该要按时完工。)

 

3. surprise : an unexpected event, piece of information, etc.; the feeling caused by something that is unexpected or unusual

例:

be a surprise:

Winning the award was a total surprise. (拿奖出乎我们意料。)

It's no surprise that he doesn't want to go. (他不想去,这并不奇怪。)

come as a surprise to:

The news came as a complete surprise to everyone. (这个消息让大家大吃一惊。)

It came as no surprise to me. (这对我来说并不意外。)

 

We had a big surprise when we found the truth. (发现真相时,我们大吃一惊。)

She wanted to give him a surprise . (她想给他一个惊喜。)

The teacher sprang a surprise on us and gave a pop quiz. (老师出人意料地给我们来了个随堂测试。)

They're in for a big surprise when they come home. (他们到家时会大吃一惊!) (备注: be in for a surprise=be going to have a surprise

Much to our surprise , she refused. (她拒绝了,这大大出乎我们意料。)

Much to his surprise, she gave him her phone number. (她肯把电话号码给他,大大出乎他的意料。)

 

4. out of the blue : if something happens out of the blue, you did not expect it, and you are very surprised or shocked by it

备注:这是较口语化的用法。

例:

Out of the blue, he asked me to come with him to Europe. (他突然邀请我跟他一起去欧洲。)

One evening, Angela phoned me out of the blue and said she was in some kind of trouble. (有天晚上,安杰拉突然打电话跟我说她遇到些麻烦。)

Then, out of the blue, he sold his house and left the country. (然后,他突然卖了房子出国了。)
