1. have your nose in a book/magazine/newspaper etc. : to be reading a book etc., especially with a lot of interest :

例:

It seems like she always has her nose in a book whenever I see her. (不管何时见她,她好像总是在看书。)

 

2. lead somebody (around) by the nose : to completely control a person 牵着鼻子走

备注:这是较口语化的用法。

例:

I'm amazed that he lets them lead him around by the nose like that. (他那样受制于人也无异议,我很讶异。)

Politicians think they can easily lead people by the nose. (政客们觉得自己可以轻易操控他人。)

 

3. pay through the nose : to pay much more for something than it is really worth 买贵了

备注:这是较口语化的用法。

例:

I found the perfect dress, but I paid through the nose for it. (我买到一条极合适的裙子,但我买贵了。)

 

4. powder your nose : an expression meaning to go to the toilet, used by women to avoid saying this directly 女士委婉地说要上厕所

例:

She's just gone to powder her nose. (她刚刚去洗手间了。)

Excuse me. I'm just going to go powder my nose. I'll be right back. (抱歉,我要去下洗手间,马上回来。)

 

5. rub somebody's nose in it/ in the dirt : to repeatedly remind someone of (a mistake, failure, etc.)

备注:这是较口语化的用法。

例:

He beat us all in the race and then rubbed our noses in it. (他在比赛中打败了我们所有人,事后一直提起刺激我们。)

 

6. cut off the nose to spite the face : to do something that is meant to harm someone else but that also harms you

例:

You can refuse to talk to her if you like, but you're just cutting off your nose to spite your face. (你可以不跟她说话,凭你高兴,但那样不仅伤害了她,也伤害了你自己。)

 

7. get up somebody's nose : to annoy or irritate (someone)

备注:这是英式英语中较口语化的用法。

例:

His jokes are really beginning to get up my nose. (他玩笑开得有点大了,我有点生气了。)

 

8. keep your nose to the grindstone : to work very hard, without stopping to rest

备注: ''grindstone'' 原意是“磨刀石”。

例:

Jim had decided he was going to keep his nose to the grindstone. (吉姆已经下定决心努力工作。)

 

9. on the nose very accurate; done very accurately, exactly

例:

He gets up at 6am on the nose every morning. (他每天早上准时 6:00 起床。)

You hit it on the nose (=you are exactly right). (你太对了。)

Her prediction is right on the nose. (她的预言太对了!)

 

10. keep your nose clean : to behave well, especially by not doing anything wrong or illegal

例:

Tom's got to keep his nose clean or he'll end up back in prison. (汤姆必须规规矩矩的不再干犯法的事,要不最后难免坐牢。)

It's not a great job, but if you keep your nose clean, you should be promoted by the end of the year. (这算不上极好的差事。但如果你规规矩矩的,年底就会升职了。)

He's been sentenced to seven years in prison, but he'll be out in four if he keeps his nose clean. (他判了 7 年,但如果他规规矩矩的没有犯错, 4 年后就可以出来了。)
