这一讲主要介绍家具、电器、车辆、楼房等东西的“破破烂烂”。

1. in bad condition/shape : if something is in bad condition, it is damaged, dirty, not working properly, etc

备注：英式英语中常作 ''in a bad state'' 。

例：

When I bought the chairs they were in very bad condition. （椅子买来的时候就很破了。）

The car's in pretty bad shape, but I'll give you $300 for it. （这车已经很破了，但是我还是会出 $300 跟你买下来。）

be in terrible/dreadful etc condition/shape

It's a nice piece of furniture, but in such terrible condition you won't get much money for it. （这家具很漂亮，但是这么旧了，卖不了多少钱。）

The inspectors said the bridge was in a bad state and potentially dangerous. （巡查人员说这桥已经很破败了，可能很危险。）

2. rickety : furniture and other structures that are rickety are in such bad condition that they look as if they would break if you tried to use them

例：

The staircase was old and rickety. （楼梯又旧又破，摇摇欲坠。）

They sat around the card table on rickety old chairs. （他们搬了快散架的破旧椅子围坐在牌桌边。）

a rickety bamboo fence （快散架的竹篱）

3. battered : something that is battered is old and in bad condition because it has been used a lot and treated roughly

例：

There was nothing in his office except for a few battered chairs. （他办公室里什么也没有，只有几把破椅子。）

Alex and Lisa used to drive around town in a battered old Fiat Uno. （艾利克斯和丽莎过去常开着辆破旧的菲亚特乌诺在城里转悠。）

4. be falling apart : if something is falling apart , it is gradually breaking into pieces, because it is old or badly made

备注： ''be falling apart'' 常用于口语中。

例：

I need some new shoes. These are falling apart. （我得买新鞋了。这几双破得不成样子了。）

San Diego's public buildings are falling apart, but the city refuses to do anything about it. （圣地亚哥的楼房破烂不堪，但是市政府根本不想改进现状。）

5. be on its last legs : if something is on its last legs, it has been used so much and is in such bad condition that you will soon not be able to use it any more

例：

The old car was on its last legs, and she knew she wouldn't be able to afford a new one. （她那辆旧车都快开不了了，但她知道自己没钱买新车。）

The washing machine was on its last legs. （洗衣机快不能用了。）

6. has seen better days : if something has seen better days, it is not in the good condition it once was in, because it is old or has been used a lot

例：

The carpets, curtains, and cushions had all seen better days but still looked quite pretty. （这些地毯、窗帘、靠垫都很旧了，但看上去还是很漂亮。）

She lived in a Victorian house that had certainly seen better days. （她住在一栋很老旧的维多利亚式的房子里。）

7. clapped-out : use this about a vehicle or machine that is so old that it does not work properly

备注： ''clapped-out'' 常用于英式英语的非正式场合，美式英语的非正式场合常用 ''beat-up'' 。

例：

Of course the carpet's a mess—all we've got is a clapped-out old vacuum cleaner. （地毯当然会很脏，我们只有一个又破又旧的吸尘器，怎么能清理得干净？）

He was using a clapped-out old typewriter. （他正在用一台又破又旧的打字机。）

She drives an old beat-up Ford. （她开一辆破旧的福特车。）
