1. be busy: when you cannot do
something because you have already arranged to do something else
例:
"Can I speak to Tom?" "I'm sorry, he's busy right now. Can he
call you back later?"
I kept asking her to come out for a drink
but for some reason she was always busy.
2. have something on: to have
already arranged to do something, for example to meet someone or to go to a
party, so that you are unable to do something else that someone has invited you
to do
备注:"have
Do you have anything on Saturday night? = Have
you got anything on Saturday night?(你周六晚上有安排吗?)
What do you have on for tomorrow?
If you're not having anything on tomorrow,
you could come to the beach with us.
3. not available: if you are told
that someone is not available when you ask to see them or to speak to them on
the telephone, you cannot see them or speak to them because they are busy doing
something else
例:
I'm sorry, but Mrs White isn't available at
the moment. Shall I get her to call you back?
Collins was not available on Thursday night.
We should go out for lunch. Are you
available next Tuesday?
I'm available to give speeches.
4. have a previous/prior engagement:
to have already made a definite arrangement to do something, so that you cannot
do something else - used especially when you are replying to an invitation
备注:''have a
I'll just check her diary. She may have a
prior engagement.
Mr Lewis regrets that he is unable to
attend, owing to a previous engagement.
I have other plans.''
5. tie somebody up/ be tied up: to
be busy in your job, for example because you have a lot of work to do or you
have an important meeting, and therefore unable to do anything else
例:
Meetings tied me up for most of the
afternoon.
I'm sorry, but he's tied up at the moment.
Could you call back later?
I'd like to help but I'm a bit tied up at
the moment.
I can't see you tomorrow. I'm tied up all
day.
6. it's not a good time:
备注:''a good
time''指的是''a
convenient time to do something''。
"I'm too busy to talk to you now.''
"When would be a good time?''
I'm afraid Friday isn't a good time for me—I've got a dance class.
