1. almost/nearly:
例:
His hair was almost white. (他头发几乎全白。)

almost all/every/everything/everyone

The burglars took nearly everything in the

2. not quite: not completely, but
almost - use this to say that something is not true, but it is almost true
例:
That's a good answer but it's not quite
correct. (这个答案不错,但不全对。)
It's not quite red, it's more like a maroon
color. (这颜色接近红色,更像栗色。)
The orbits of the planets are almost circular,
but not quite. (行星运行轨道几乎呈圆形,但不是正圆。)
3. practically/virtually:
例:
The cupboard was practically empty. (柜子几乎是空的。)
She looks practically the same as his last
girlfriend. (她跟他的前女友长得几乎一模一样。)
Carbon fiber tennis rackets are virtually
unbreakable. (碳素纤维网球拍几乎打不坏。)
Mexico's rain forest has been virtually

practically all/everything/everyone etc.: very nearly all
The frost killed practically every plant in
the garden. (霜冻把公园里几乎所有植物都冻死了。)
Virtually everyone had gone home. (大家差不多都回家了。)
4. just about/more or less/pretty much:

All the rooms are more or less the same

Until the 18th century, the region remained

His jacket was pretty much the same color

5. be close: if a guess at a number,
amount, etc. is close, it is almost correct but not exactly right
例:
"I reckon he's about 65."
"You're close - he's 67."(-我猜他约65岁。
-答案很接近,67。)
6. be on the verge/brink of: to be
very close to an extremely bad situation
例:
The two countries are on the brink of war. (这两国大战一触即发。)
be on the verge of tears/death/hysteria
etc.
Kerry is on the verge of a nervous
breakdown. (=came close to a nervous breakdown)(凯利差点就精神崩溃了。)
