英语怎么形容“雪上加霜”?

“雪上加霜”,英文里可能没有完全相同的表达,但有一些类似的用法来表达“使情况变得更糟”,我们来看看。

 

1. to add insult to injury: use that to say that something makes a bad situation worse for someone, by unfairly giving them another problem that relates to or is a result of the original one 雪上加霜

例:

The bank not only refused to refund the money but, to add insult to injury, charged me for the letter telling me so! (银行不仅不退钱,而且还雪上加霜,告诉我不退钱的那封信还要收钱!)

She not only deceived him but, to add insult to injury, allowed him to pay for her meal. (她不仅骗他,更有甚者,吃饭还让他买单。)

Most people were forced to work longer hours each week, and to add insult to injury, the company decided not to give pay raises. (过去大多数人被逼加班,而且公司不肯给加班费,这真是雪上加霜。)

 

2. make things worse/make matters worse/make it worse: to make a bad or difficult situation even worse, especially when you were trying to improve it 祸不单行;更糟的是……

例:

Don't interfere. You'll only make things worse. (你别插手!你越帮越忙。)

To make things worse, Jimmy suddenly announced he'd left his passport at home. (更糟的是,吉姆突然说他把护照落在家里了。)

Why not try running the anti-virus software? It can't make things any worse, can it? (为什么不杀杀毒?反正杀杀毒总不至于更糟糕。)

Getting angry will make things worse. (发火只会让事情更糟。)

My car broke down, and to make matters worse, I can't afford to fix it. (我车坏了,祸不单行,我还没钱修车。)

To make matters worse, the director's gone on holiday without leaving anyone in charge. (更糟的是,导演去度假之前也没交代他不在时谁来负责。)

 

3. go from bad to worse: if a situation goes from bad to worse, it is already bad and then becomes even worse 每况愈下

例:

The rail service has gone from bad to worse since it was privatized. (铁路私有化以后,铁路系统的服务每况愈下。)

Things went from bad to worse, and soon the couple were barely talking to each other. (夫妻感情越来越差,没多久两人就几乎不讲话了。)

The company has been struggling for years, and things have recently gone from bad to worse. (苦苦支撑多年之后,公司最近每况愈下。)

 

4. go downhill: to start getting worse, especially after a particular time or event 某个时间点或某件情况愈发糟糕

例:

Moving in together was a mistake, and things rapidly went downhill. (俩人同居就是个错误,住在一起后问题接踵而至。)

When things started to go downhill, Kyle began looking for another job. (公司情况越来越差,凯尔开始找新工作。)

I said I didn't like baseball, and the interview went downhill from then on. (我说我不喜欢棒球,从这句话开始,面试就不好了。)

 

5. worsen: v. if a bad situation worsens, or something worsens it, it becomes worse变得更糟,更差

例:

Interfering now could worsen the problem. (现在插手只会让情况更糟。)

The weather worsened during the night. (夜间天气更差了。)

The government's bungling attempts to help have only worsened the refugees' plight. (政府帮忙不成反帮倒忙,结果使难民的处境更加糟糕。)

The situation was worsened by Roy's tendency to drink heavily in times of stress. (罗伊压力一大就想大醉一场,这让情况变得更糟。)
