1. Lily: No, Ted, you don't mess with a honeymoon.


解析:

mess with: to get involved with something that may cause problems or be dangerous 惹麻烦,牵涉,卷入

例:

Don't mess with drugs. (别碰毒品。)

 

2. Claudia: Well, lucky for you, I know that guest list backwards and forwards .


解析:

know something backwards and forwards: to know something very well or perfectly 非常了解

“非常了解”的几种说法:

英式英语

美式英语

know something backwards

know something backwards and forwards

know something inside out

know something inside and out

know something like the back of your hand

例:

He knew the process backwards and forwards. (他对程序非常了解。)

She know the business inside and out. (她对整件事情非常了解。)

I know this town like the back of my hand. (我非常了解这座小镇。)

 

3. Lily: We'll have them check the registry for anyone named Victoria. Or maybe she goes by Vicky or Tori..


解析:

go by (a name): to be known by a name 某人为人所熟知的名字或昵称

例:

His name is Edwin, but he goes by Ed. (他名叫 Edwin ,但人们叫他 Ed 。)  

 

4. Claudia: Ted. I'm sorry I hung up on you earlier.


解析:

hang up: to end a telephone connection by putting the handset on its base or by turning the telephone off 挂断电话

备注: ''hang up'' 常与介词 ''on'' 连用。

例:

''Is he still on the phone?''  ''No, he hung up.'' - 电话挂了没?   - 他挂了。)

Let me talk to her before you hang up the phone. (挂电话前让我跟她说几句。)

I can't believe he hung up on me! (他竟敢挂我电话!)

 

5. Lily: Well, I just think that maybe she's not that into you and that's why she didn't give you her number. Robin, care to chime in with anything?


解析:

chime in: to add your comment or opinion to a conversation or discussion that you have been listening to 插嘴

备注: ''chime in'' 常与介词 ''with'' 连用。

例:

He kept chiming with his opinions. (别人讲话,他老插进来发表意见。)

''He left hours ago,'' Janet chimed in. (珍妮特插了一句,“他几个小时前就走了。”)

 

6. Ted: Whoa. Guess we were gone a while.


解析:

gone: adj. not present, no longer at a place 离开

例:

How long will he be gone? (他会离开多久?)

She should have been back by now. She's been gone for more than an hour. (她去了已经一个多小时了,现在也该回来了。)

 

7. Ted: Damn, he's looking mighty fine in that tux.


解析:

mighty: very 非常,太……

备注: ''mighty'' 的这种用法常见于美式英语中。

例:

You father and I are mighty proud of you. (孩子,你让你爸和你妈太引以为豪了。)

That was a mighty tasty dinner. (刚才这顿饭真是太美味了。)

It sure was mighty cold last night. (昨晚真太冷了。)

 

8. Ted: If I walk in there, I'm robbing both of us of what could be...


解析:

rob: to keep someone from getting something expected or wanted 阻止 / 妨碍某人得到某物

备注:这里的 ''rob'' 常与介词 ''of'' 连用。我们较熟悉的 ''rob'' 的释义是“抢劫”,剧中不是这个意思。

例:

He made a great shot, but the goalie robbed him.(=the goalie blocked his shot and prevented him from scoring a goal) (他这个射门很精彩,但守门员把球扑住了。)

The other team robbed them of a victory by getting a last-minute goal. (对手在最后时刻进了一球,他们最终输了。)

Her illness robbed her of a normal childhood.(=she wasn't able to have a normal childhood because of her illness) (她从小生病,没法过正常孩子过的生活。)
