1. hype/hype up : to try to make people interested in a product, entertainer, film etc., using television, radio, and newspapers - use this to show that you do not trust this kind of information 言过其实地宣传某物

例：

Like most Hollywood movies it was so hyped up that when I saw it I was completely disappointed. （这部电影跟大部分好莱坞电影一样，宣传过度，我看后失望极了。）

The movie has been hyped up far beyond its worth. （这部影片被吹得离谱了。）

The cosmetics industry is usually quick to hype its new products. （在化妆品行业，宣传新产品的速度通常是很快的。）

The director is just using the controversy to hype his movie. （这个导演利用该影片引起的争议来炒热这部片子。）

2. plug : v. to try to persuade people to buy a book, see a film etc., by talking about it publicly, especially on television or radio （在传播媒介中）宣传（某事物）

例：

The only reason she agreed to be interviewed was to plug her new record. （她愿意接受采访，就是为了宣传她的新唱片。）

They've been plugging his new show on the radio. （电台一直在宣传他的新片。）

补充： ''plug'' 做名词，表示“（在传播媒介中插入宣传商品的）推销广告”。

例：

I heard a plug for that cafe on the radio. （我在广播上听到这个咖啡厅的宣传广告。）

During the show she managed to put in a plug for her new book. （她在节目里把自己的新书宣传了一把。）

She put in a plug for the band's new album on her radio program. （做电台节目时，她把乐队的新唱片宣传了一通。）

3. sell : to encourage people to buy something

例：

There's no question about it - scandal sells newspapers. （人们想看丑闻八卦才会去买报纸，这点毫无疑问。）

It is not price but quality that sells our shoes. （我们的鞋好卖并不是因为价钱低而是因为质量好。）

Good advertising sells. （好广告让大家有购买欲。）

His name on the cover sells the book. （大家都是冲着这本书的作者才去买这本书。）

It's not just a question of making a good product - we also have to go out and sell it to people. （不光是要做好产品，还要走出去做好推销。）

4. push : to try to sell more of a product or service by advertising it a lot

备注： ''push'' 是非正式的用法。

例：

Revlon is really pushing its new range of creams. （露华浓正努力推销自己新推出的面霜系列产品。）

Sports stars earn big bucks for pushing everything from shoes to soft drinks. （体育明星为各种商品做广告代言，从运动鞋到饮料不一而足，都赚得盆满钵满。）
