1. ordinary: ordinary things are not special or unusual

例：

It's just an ordinary house in an ordinary street. （房子普通，地段也很普通。）

He wore an ordinary business suit with a white shirt and tie. （他穿了一套普通的西装，配白衬衫，系领带。）

Can you get connected to the Internet through an ordinary telephone line? （用普通的电话线能联网吗？）

2. normal: something that is normal is just as you would expect it to be, because it is not special or different

例：

The new Ford looks like any normal car, but it has a special advanced engine. （这辆新的福特车看上去很普通，但它的引擎很特别、很高级。）

January 2nd is a public holiday in Scotland, but in England it is a normal working day. （在苏格兰一月二号是公共假期，但在英格兰那天只是个普通的工作日。）

3. routine: use this about something that is done regularly as part of the normal system and not because of any special problem

例：

routine check/inspection/examination etc

The fault was discovered during a routine check of the plane. （在飞机的例行检查中发现了这个问题。）

Police found the heroin during a routine inspection of a ship. （警察上船做例行检查，发现了海洛因。）

It was on a Saturday 15 years ago that, during a routine visit to the doctor, I learned I had cancer. （15年前的一个周六，我跟往常一样去看医生，得知自己患了癌症。）

4. conventional : a conventional method, piece of equipment, weapon etc. is of the normal type that has been used for a long time - use this especially when you are comparing one thing with something else that is new or different

A microwave cooks food much faster than a conventional oven. （微波加热食物比普通炉子煮食快得多。）

The hospital provides both conventional and alternative medical treatments. （这家医院既有传统疗法，也有替代疗法。）

5. day-to-day: use this about the ordinary work, activities, and problems that happen every day

例：

Little is known about his day-to-day life. （他的日常生活情况鲜为人知。）

As Managing Director, I am responsible for the day-to-day management of the company. （我是公司总经理，管理公司的日常运作。）

He decided to immerse himself in the day-to-day affairs of his company until business improved. （他决定全身心投入到公司日常事务中，直至公司业务好转为止。）

6. regular: ordinary but good enough for a particular purpose

备注：''regular''常用于美式英语中。

例：

If they don't have Tylenol, just get me regular aspirin. （没卖泰诺的话，就给我买普通的阿司匹林好了。）

Even though the dye is quite strong, a regular shampoo will remove it. （尽管这种染料颜色很强，但普通的洗发水也可以把它洗掉。）

7. everyday: ordinary, usual, or happening every day

备注：''everyday''是形容词，与''every day''不同，''every day''是副词，“每天”的意思。

例：

a simple, everyday object（简单普通之物）

Sally was still dressed in her everyday clothes. （莎莉仍然穿着平时常穿的衣服。）

Arthritis made it difficult for him to do everyday things like take out the garbage or mow the lawn. （得了关节炎，他做点生活琐事——如倒垃圾或除草——都变得很困难。）

The first week of the course is spent teaching students English phrases needed for everyday life. （第一周的课程是教一些日常生活中要用到的英语词组。）

Describe it in ordinary everyday language. （用日常用语描述这件东西。）
