2. quite a bit/a fair amount : a large amount of something compared with the total amount that you have

备注：英式英语中常作 ''a fair bit'' 。

例：

Don knows a fair bit about managing a company. （唐很很懂得管理公司。）

I wasted a fair amount of time before I figured out what was wrong with the car. （我花了很多时间才找出车是哪里出了问题。）

3. tons : a very large amount of something

备注：英式英语中常作 "loads" ，英式英语的非正式场合常作 "masses" 。

例：

"How much space is there in the back of your car?" "Masses." （ - 你车后面有多大地方放东西？ - 地方大着呢。）

It was a fantastic meal - there was loads to eat. （这顿饭太棒了，可吃的东西太多了。）

tons/loads of

He made tons of money at some computer company. （他在某电脑公司赚了很多钱。）

I've got tons of homework to do this weekend. （这周末我有好多作业要做。）

She's a great athlete with loads of talent. （她是个很有天赋的运动员。）

tons and tons/loads and loads etc.

There's tons and tons of information on the Internet if you're willing to look for it. （只要你想找，互联网上的信息取之不尽用之不竭。）

4. piles/heaps/stacks : a large amount of something, especially work or money

备注：常用于英式英语非正式的场合。

例：

"How much money have you saved?" "Oh, stacks!" （ - 你省了多少钱下来？ - 嗯，很多很多！）

I have piles to do when I get home tonight. （晚上回家我有很多事要做。）

Her family is very rich - they have heaps of money. （她家非常非常有钱。）

5. a mountain of : a large amount of something such as work, debt, or information

例：

We had to complete a mountain of paperwork to get the loan. （借贷之前要提交许多文件。）

The economies of Third World countries are often crippled by huge mountains of debt which they will never be able to repay. （第三世界国家欠的债往往多到还不清，国家经济也因此垮掉。）

6. heavy : a lot or in very large amounts, especially when this is worse than expected

例：

heavy rain/snow/traffic/fighting/losses/taxation

The match went ahead despite the heavy rain. （尽管下大雨，比赛仍然继续进行。）

It was a fierce battle, and losses on both sides were heavy. （战事激烈，双方损失都很大。）

Traffic was really heavy this morning - it took me over an hour to get here. （今天早上交通拥堵得厉害，我花了一个多小时才到这儿。）
