1. come out of your shell: to become
less shy and more willing to talk to people, especially as the result of an
experience that has made you more confident
例:
She's started to come out of her shell a
little. (她开始变得健谈了一些。)
When he first joined the company he was
very quiet but now he's come out of his shell a lot. (他刚来公司的时候,非常内向文静,现在放得开了,话也多了很多。)
Her manner is a little diffident, but
she'll soon come out of her shell with a little encouragement. (她有点羞涩没自信,但是只要多鼓励她,她很快就会变得健谈起来。)

2. bring somebody out of their shell:
to make someone less shy and more willing to talk to other people
例:
Emma was always such a shy girl, but these
drama classes have really brought her out of her shell. (艾玛向来很害羞,但是表演课让她变得外向起来。)
If Nick stayed with you this vacation,
perhaps it would bring him out of his shell a little. (如果尼克这个假期和你住在一起的话,他可能就会不那么害羞了。)
I had hoped that university would bring him

3. open up: to gradually stop being
shy, and become more willing to talk about yourself
例:
On our third date Melissa began to open up
and told me about her family and about the years she spent in Italy. (我和玛丽莎第三次约会的时候,她开始向我打开心扉,说了她家里人的事,也说了她在意大利的生活。)
Last night was the first time that Ken had

(二)怎么形容一个人“害羞”?
1. shy:
例:
He was a quiet shy man. (他很害羞。)
She was very shy with strangers. (她看到陌生人很害羞。)
As a teenager, I was painfully shy
(= extremely shy). (我十几岁,非常害羞。)
He was too shy to come and sit by me in
class. (他太害羞了,在班上不好意思坐我身边。)
2. bashful: easily embarrassed in
social situations
例:
a bashful grin(腼腆地笑了笑)
Don't be bashful about telling people how
you feel. (别羞于表达你内心的感受。)
3. reserved: unwilling to express
your emotions or talk about your problems
例:
Ellen was a shy, reserved girl. (艾伦是个害羞内向的女孩。)
4. retiring: someone who is retiring
does not want to be with other people, especially people they do not know
例:
As a child, Elizabeth was very shy and retiring. (伊丽莎白小时候非常害羞不爱跟陌生人讲话。)
