1. alert : to officially or publicly warn people of possible danger so that they can be ready to deal with it

例:

The school immediately alerted the police. (学校马上报了警。)

When he realized that one engine was not working, the pilot alerted air traffic control. (飞行员一发现引擎坏了一个,立即给空中交通管制台发了警报。)

alert somebody to something

a poster to alert people to the disease (警示人们注意这个疾病的海报)

campaigns to alert the public to the dangers of HIV (警示公众防范 HIV 病毒的活动)

alert somebody that

Drivers are being alerted that an escaped prisoner has been seen hitch-hiking on the road to Frankfurt. (警方已经向沿途司机发出警告,有个逃犯在通往法兰克福市的路上企图搭便车潜逃。)

 

2. sound/raise the alarm : to warn everyone about something bad or dangerous that is already happening so that they can take action to stop it or avoid it

备注: "sound/raise the alarm" 常用于英式英语中。

例:

Kate was told to stand at the door, and to raise the alarm if a guard came. (他们让凯特在门口放风,如果有警卫过来就提醒他们。)

Neighbors raised the alarm when they smelled smoke. (邻居们一闻到烟雾味,就提醒大家。)

sound/raise the alarm about

The Red Cross has sounded the alarm about the danger of further famine in the region. (红十字会已经发出警告,这一地区可能会进一步发生饥荒。)

The problem is that if you sound the alarm about fraud in your company, you might end up out of a job. (问题是,如果揭发了公司的诈骗行为,你最后可能会被炒鱿鱼。)

 

3. forewarn : to warn someone about something bad that is going to happen soon, so that they have enough time to prepare for it

备注: "forewarn" 是正式的用法。

例:

Barry forewarned me that the meeting was going to be tough. (巴瑞提醒我说,这个会议会很艰难。)

We had been forewarned that the roads weren't very good. (已经有人警告我们说路不好走。)

We'd been forewarned of the dangers of traveling at night. (已经有人警告过我们夜间出游很危险。)

be forewarned of something

A police team, forewarned of the raid, had taken up positions inside the bank. (警方已事先获悉有人要来抢劫银行,现在已经在银行里部署好了。)

 

4. caution : to warn someone not to do something because it is likely to be dangerous or have a bad result

备注: "caution" 是正式的用法。

例:

"Be careful now," Sarah cautioned. "Don't do anything stupid." (她说:“小心点,别做蠢事。”)

caution somebody against doing something

The policeman cautioned the children against talking to strangers. (警察警告孩子们不要和陌生人说话。)

caution against (doing) something

Marshall cautioned against pouring millions of pounds into taking legal action when there was no guarantee of victory. (马修警告说,在没有必胜把握的情况下,采取法律行动时不要投入过大。)

补充: "caution" 做名词的时候:

例:

Caution: do not install electrical equipment near or around water sources. (注意:电子设备要远离水源。)

The video begins with a caution that you must do some warm-up exercises first. (视频的开头提醒人们要先做热身运动。)
