(上接 第一部分 )“告状”,“打小报告”,“检举揭发”的英文还能怎么说?

1. talk : to give the police information about a crime that you know about or are involved in, especially when they are questioning you officially about it 在警方正式盘问时透露你知道或你涉及的犯罪行动

例:

The suspect was questioned for two hours, but refused to talk. (盘问了嫌疑人数小时,他就是不说。)

He said he'd come back and kill me if I talked. (他说,如果我向警方告密,他会回来杀了我。)

 

2. blow the whistle : to let people know about an illegal activity which has been happening for a long time, especially when you have been helping to keep it secret 向公众揭发一项长期进行的犯罪活动(尤其是你过去一直试图将其保密)

例:

He was shot because he knew too much and was about to blow the whistle. (他知道的太多了,而且准备去告密,所以被杀了。)

blow the whistle about

It was the factory manager who eventually blew the whistle about the pollution scandal. (是公司经理最终爆出了工厂的环保黑幕。)

blow the whistle on

We'd better get her before she has a chance to blow the whistle on us. (我们最好在她爆出我们之前,抓到她。)

补充: ''blow the whistle'' 的名词形式 '' whistle-blower '' (告密者) : someone who tells people in authority or the public about dishonest or illegal practices at the place where they work

 

3. tip off : to give the police or another authority information that will allow them to prevent a crime taking place 向警方或官方机构提供情报,使他们阻止即将发生的犯罪

例:

tip off somebody

Somebody must have tipped off the police. They were already waiting at the house. (一定有人向警方告密了,警察一早就在屋里等我们自投罗网了。)

The alert was started by another inmate who tipped off prison staff. (警报是另一个囚犯发出的,他事先已经向狱警报告了情况。)

tip somebody off

I wonder who tipped them off. (我很好奇是谁告发了他们。)

tip somebody off that

His contact had not merely tipped him off that drugs were on the premises; he had told them where to look. (他的眼神出卖了他,不仅告诉他们毒品就在屋里,而且告诉他们毒品具体在哪里。)

补充: ''tip off'' 的名词形式 ''tip-off''

The arrests came after a tip-off from a member of the public. (由于有人检举揭发,他们很快就被捕了。)

Police were called to the hotel after a tip-off. (有人检举,警察到了该酒店。)

 

4. name names : to make public the names of people who have done something wrong 将犯错人的名字公诸于众

例:

If you don't give me the money, I'm going to start naming names. (如果你不给我钱,我就把这件事抖出去。)

Someone—I won't name names—has been caught stealing from the stores. (有个人——我就不讲他的名字了——在店里偷东西被抓了。)

He said he knew who did it, but he wouldn't name names. (他说他知道是谁干的,但是不想将这个人的名字宣之于口。)

 

5. nark : to secretly tell the police or someone in authority about someone else's criminal activity, especially activities involving illegal drugs 向警方或官方人员告密(尤其是涉及毒品交易的罪行)

备注: ''nark'' 常用于英式英语中非正式的场合,美式英语中常用 ''narc''

例:

"How did they get caught?" "Somebody must have narked." - 他们如何被抓的? - 一定有人告密。)

nark on

If things get too risky, Ken will probably narc on you to the cops. (如果事情不妙,肯可能会向警方供出你来。)
