1. own: if you own something, especially something big like a house, a car, or a company, it is your property and you have the legal right to have it

例：

We don't own the apartment, we're just renting it. （这房子不是我们的，我们只是租客。）

Clark owns about 40 companies in northern Europe. （克拉克在北欧大约拥有40家公司。）

privately owned (=owned by an individual person, not by a company or government)

2. have: to own something, especially something that ordinary people are likely to own

备注：英式英语中常用''have got''。

例：

We don't have a TV. （我们没有电视。）

How many of your students have a computer? （你班上学生有多少人有电脑的？）

What kind of car has she got? （她的车是哪一种的？）

I've worked hard for everything I've got. （我现在拥有的一切都是我努力工作得来的。）

3. possess: to own something - use this especially in negative sentences to say that someone does not own something that most people own

备注：''possess''常用于正式的场合，常用于否定句中。

例：

Very few families in this area possess a telephone. （这个地方没几家有电话的。）

He never wore a suit—I don't think he possessed one. （他从不穿西装，我觉得他根本没有西装。）

Because of his gambling, he lost everything he possessed. （他赌博输掉了一切。）

4. control/have control of: to own a larger part of a company than other people so that you have power to make decisions about that company

例：

The Johnson family has effective control of the company, owning almost 60% of the shares. （琼森家族拥有这个公司将近60%的股份，牢牢掌控着这个公司。）

5. hold: to own part of a company because you own a number of the equal parts into which it is divided; to officially own or possess money, a document, etc.

例：

Do you hold a valid passport? （你持有在有效期内的护照吗？）

a privately held company（私企）

She works for Le Monde, where the staff hold a significant stake in the company. （她在《世界报》上班，《世界报》大部分股份是掌握在员工手里的。）

a situation in which a husband and wife both hold shares in a family company（夫妻双方都拥有这个家族企业的部分股份）

6. have a stake in: to own part of a company and therefore be able to have a share in the money it makes 拥有股份

例：

Labatt beer has a 45% stake in the Blue Jays baseball team. （Labatt啤酒持有多伦多蓝鸟队45%的股份。）

She has a stake in her husband's company, which she will have to give up if they divorce. （她拥有她丈夫公司部分股份，如果他俩离婚，这部分股份她就得放弃。）

7. interest: if a person, company, or government has an interest in a business, they own part of that business

例：

controlling interest (=a large enough part of the company or business to give you the power to make decisions about it)

In 1986 GM acquired a controlling interest in the sports car maker Lotus. （1986年，通用得到了跑车制造商“莲花”的大部分股份。）
