1. depend: if something depends on a
fact, result, decision etc., it is not fixed or decided because it will change
if the fact, result, decision etc changes
例:
it depends how/where/what etc.
I might not be able to go to France—it
depends how much it costs. (我可能去不了法国,去不去得了得看去法国总共得花多少钱。)
it depends/that depends (=say this when your decision may change according to what happens)(备注:"it depends/that
depends"常用于口语中。)
"Are you going to apply for that
job?" "Well, it depends."(-你会不会去应征那份工作? -嗯,看情况吧。)
it all depends (=say this to emphasize that you cannot be certain about something)(备注:"it all depends"常用于口语中。)
We still don't know whether we'll have to
move to a new house or not - it all depends. (我们还不确定是否会搬家,得看情况,不一定。)

The amount I earn depends on the kind of
work I'm doing. (我赚多少钱取决于我做什么工种。)
2. according to: if something is
done according to particular facts, a particular situation etc, these affect
the way it is done
例:
Telephone charges vary according to the
time of day. (根据时段不同电话费有所不同。)
The students were grouped according to age
and ability. (学生们被根据年龄和能力分组。)
3. depending on something: use this
to say that what will happen or what you do will change according to what
happens in another situation
例:
Inflation goes up and down depending on the
state of the economy. (根据经济情况的不同,通货膨胀会有起伏。)
In many languages there are different words
for "you" depending on who you are talking to. (很多语言中,根据说话对象的不同,“你”有不同的说法。)
I kept getting different answers depending
on who I asked. (问的人不同,我得到的答案也不同。)
4. be determined by: if the quality
or nature of something is determined by other things, it depends on those
things for how it is made
例:
The color of the rock is determined by the
type of mineral present in it. (岩石的颜色是由岩石里矿物质的种类决定的。)
The ultimate flavor of the cheese variety
is determined by the length of time it is allowed to mature. (芝士最终的风味是由成熟期的长短决定的。)
5. be dictated by: if a decision,
choice, or result is dictated by something, it depends very strongly on it, and
leaves no choice for the people involved
例:
A country's choice of export products is
dictated by geography, climate, and natural resources. (一个国家可以出口什么是由该国的地理、气候和自然资源这些因素决定的。)
Any development in the city center is
dictated by the city's historic preservation laws. (市中心的发展计划都受制于该城市的历史遗迹保护法。)
6. be based on: if one decision,
situation, calculation etc is based on another, the second is the main thing
upon which the first decision etc depends
例:
Your pension will be based on the amount
that you are earning when you retire. (退休时的工资状况将决定退休金的多少。)
7. be riding on: if something
important such as money or success is riding on the result of something else,
it depends on it
例:
It's really stressful when you know that
your whole future may be riding on this one interview. (一想到将来怎样全都取决于这一场面试,真的压力很大。)
Boxing has become big business, with a huge
amount of money riding on the outcome of a fight. (一场拳击赛的结果决定一大笔钱的流向,因此拳击已经成了个大产业。)
