1. on the surface: if a person,
place, or situation is pleasant, normal, calm etc. on the surface , they seem
that way until you know them better
例:
On the surface, life seemed normal in
Beirut at that time. (那时候贝鲁特的生活表面看起来很平静。)
Mike was very pleasant on the surface, but
he had a nasty temper. (迈克表面看起来很好相处的样子,实际上他脾气很差。)
2. outwardly: if someone is
outwardly calm, happy etc., that is how they seem to be, but in fact they are
probably nervous, unhappy etc.
例:
Outwardly she seemed contented and happy with
life. (表面看来她好像对生活感到满足快乐。)
outwardly calm/unconcerned etc.
Henry remained calm and outwardly
unaffected by the terrible events of the previous day. (亨利还是很冷静,表面看起来没被昨天的恶性事件影响到。)
Outwardly she is cool, calm, and
collected. (她看起来很冷静很有自制力。)
3. to all appearances: use this when
something seems to be true about someone or something especially when it is not
true
例:
To all appearances, they were a happily
married couple. (他们表面看上去像是幸福的一对。)
4. on the face of it: use this to
say that something seems true, you mean that it seems true, but you are not at
all certain that it actually is, because you do not know all the facts
例:
On the face of it, this seems like a
perfectly good idea—we must wait and see if it turns out well. (这好像是个绝佳的主意,但到底好不好还要看结果才知道。)
On the face of it, he appeared to be an
ideal candidate for the position. (他可能是最适合的人选了。)
5. seemingly:
seemingly impossible/endless/unimportant
etc.: seeming to be impossible, endless,
unimportant etc., especially when this is not actually true
例:
Running a mile in under 4 minutes was a
seemingly impossible task. (四分钟内跑一英里看起来似乎是个不可能完成的任务。)
I looked down at the seemingly endless
expanse of green of the Serengeti Plain. (我俯瞰塞伦盖蒂平原,这片绿色好像无边无际。
)
The music was strange, seemingly without a
melody. (这音乐好奇怪,好像不成曲调。)
6. seeming: seeming to be
true about someone's feelings, attitudes, or abilities
备注:''seeming''常用于正式的场合。
例:
I wondered why Richard is seeming
reluctance to talk about his family. (理查好像不愿意谈及自己的家人,我想知道为什么。)
The professor became frustrated by his
students' seeming inability to understand simple questions. (学生们好像连很简单的问题都弄不明白,教授因此很沮丧。)
7. superficial: feelings, attitudes,
or qualities that are superficial are not real or true, even though someone or
something seems to have them
例:
The people are friendly, but only in a
superficial way. (这些人很和蔼很好相处的样子,但这只是表象。)
The landscape bore a superficial
resemblance to England's green and pleasant land, and each house had a small
suburban garden. (这里每家每户都有一个小花园,看起来很像英格兰,景色宜人、绿草遍地。)
Despite their superficial similarities, the
two novels are, in fact, very different. (虽然这两部小说表面看起来很像,但实际上差别很大。)
Beneath his refined manners and superficial
