1. go to any lengths/stop at nothing : to be willing to do anything, even if it is cruel, dishonest, or illegal, in order to get what you want

例:

He's prepared to go to any lengths to find the men who killed his daughter. (他准备好了,不惜一切也要找出杀害女儿的凶手。)

Bella would go to any lengths to fulfill her ambition. (贝拉为了达成自己的野心,将不惜一切。)

Lawrence would stop at nothing to achieve power and wealth. (劳伦斯为了得到权利和财富,将不惜一切。)

 

2. be hellbent on : to be extremely determined to do something, especially something dangerous or something that may have a bad result

备注: ''be hellbent on'' 常用于非正式的场合。

例:

be hellbent on doing something

Bob's hellbent on going through with the plan, even though it's sure to end in disaster. (即使这个计划最后肯定会破产,鲍勃仍执意要实施这个计划。)

be hellbent on revenge/destruction

Gangs of youths rampaged through the streets, hellbent on destruction. (古惑仔们一门心思搞破坏,上街闹事。)

 

3. whatever the cost : if you do something whatever the cost , you are determined to do it even if it causes a lot of problems or you have to spend a lot of money, use a lot of effort etc

例:

I want him back here as soon as possible, whatever the cost. (我要他不惜任何代价,尽快回来。)

They are determined to win back the disputed territories, whatever the cost. (他们决定不论付出多大代价都要争回那块有争议的领土。)

 

4. come hell or high water : use this to emphasize that you are determined to do something in spite of any problems or difficulties

备注: ''come hell or high water'' 常用于口语中。

例:

I'll be there in time. Don't worry. Come hell or high water. (我会及时赶到的,别担心。即使天崩地裂我也会及时到。)

Come hell or high water, he'd never missed a race and he wasn't going to miss this one. (不论刮风下雨,他不曾落下一场比赛,今天这场比赛他同样不会错过。)

 

5. ruthless : someone who is ruthless is so determined to get what they want, especially in business or politics, that they do not care if they harm other people

例:

You should be careful of Tom—he can be pretty ruthless if anyone gets in his way. (你要小心汤姆,如果有人挡道,他会不择手段。)

 

6. play hardball : to be very determined to get what you want, especially in business or politics

备注: ''play hardball'' 常用于美式英语非正式的场合。

例:

Tom is getting ready to play hardball in an effort to persuade Hanson to reconsider a merger. (汤姆劝汉森重新考虑合并的事,汤姆已经准备好了劝说时要采取强硬的态度。)

play hardball with

The Deputy Prime Minister told reporters that Canada was ready to play hardball with the US. (加拿大副首相告诉记者,加拿大已经准备好了要跟美国周旋到底。)

 

7. dogged : dogged behavior shows that you are very determined and that you will not give up

例:

dogged determination/persistence/resistance/refusal

The team played with dogged determination. (这个队伍抱着死战到底的决心。)

his dogged refusal to admit defeat (他死不认输的态度)

the dogged persistence of the defenders (誓死守卫)
