1. belong to: if something belongs
to someone, they own it
例:
This watch belonged to my grandfather. (这是我爷爷的表。)
Who does that Walkman belong to? (那个随身听是谁的?)
A car believed to belong to the bank
robbers was found abandoned yesterday. (昨天找到一辆被弃的车,警方断定是那起银行抢劫案劫匪的车。)
2. be the property of: to
belong to someone - often written on books, clothes etc. to show who owns them
备注:"be
the property of"是正式的用法,常用于书面语中。
例:
This hymn book is the property of Pitt
Street Methodist Church. (这本圣歌归皮特街卫理公会教堂所有。)
If he defaults on the loan, the land will
become the property of the bank. (他如果到期未还贷款,这片地将被银行没收。)
3. be mine/yours/John's etc.: if
something is mine/yours/John's etc., it belongs to me, you, John etc.
例:
"Hey, that's my pen!" "Sorry! I didn't know it was
yours."(-嘿,那是我的笔! -抱歉,我不知道是你的。)
"Whose bike is that?" "It's
Martin's."(-那是谁的自行车? -是马丁的自行车。)
The money wasn't Sara's to lend you in the
first place (=Sara didn't have the right to lend it). (莎拉本就无权把钱借给你。)
4. my/your/his etc. : belonging to
me, you, him etc.
例:
Please can you move your car? It's blocking
my driveway. (能把你的车开到旁边一点吗?挡着我的车道了。)
I've got a problem with my dishwasher. (我的洗碗机有点坏了。)
My grandmother lives near your place - just
around the corner in fact. (我奶奶家离你家很近,从你家门口拐个弯就到。)
5. your own: belonging to you and not
to anyone else
例:
You can rent skis or you can bring your own.
(滑雪用具你可以租,也可以自己带来。)
Joe left the company to set up his own
business. (乔离职了,自己去开公司。)
6. of your own:
例:
We have problems of our own. (我们也有自己要解决的问题。)
a room/car/computer etc. of your own: one that belongs to you and no one else, especially when this is
something you want to own
Our neighbors let us use their garage, but
we really need one of our own. (邻居让我们把车停在他们家的车库,但是我们确实也需要自己有一个车库。)
I'd like to have a place of my own (= my
own home). (我想有个自己的房子。)
The charity provides accommodation for
homeless people, and helps them find homes of their own. (这个慈善组织给无家可归的人提供临时住所,还帮他们找永久的住所。)
7. personal: belonging only to you
例:
My personal view is that we shouldn’t offer
him the job. (我的个人意见是,我们不该聘用他。)
I know from personal experience that you
can’t trust Ralph. (我的经验告诉我,别相信拉尔夫。)
The car is for personal use only. (这辆车只能私人用。)

possessions/property/belongings
The dead man's personal possessions were
sent back to his family. (死者的私人物品都寄回给他家人了。)
When I went to her room all her personal
belongings had gone. (我去她房间一看,她的东西都不在了。)
my/their etc own personal
celebrities with their own personal trainer(拥有私人教练的名人)
