1. be somebody's fault: if something is someone's fault , they are responsible for it, especially because they made a mistake

例:

He played very well, and it is not his fault we lost. (他表现得很好,我们队输了不是他的错。)

be somebody's own fault (=when someone is responsible for something bad that happens to them)

Marie failed the exam, but it was her own fault - she didn't do any work. (玛丽考试不及格,但是这都是她自己的错,因为她根本没复习。)

be somebody's fault (that)

I'm so sorry. It's my fault that we're so late. (对不起,我们迟到这么久都怪我。)

be somebody's fault for doing something

Of course she was angry—but it's your fault for telling her about the whole thing in the first place. (她当然会生气了,但你一开始把整件事告诉她就是个错误。)

the fault of somebody

Suggesting that our problems are the fault of someone else won't solve anything. (现在,将我们的问题怪罪到别人头上都不能解决问题。)

 

2. be to blame: if someone or something is to blame for a bad situation, they caused it

例:

When kids do badly at school, it's not always the teachers who are to blame. (小孩在学校表现不好,也不要总是怪老师。)

be to blame for

Some people think television is to blame for a lot of the problems in modern society. (有些人认为现代社会很多问题都是由于电视造成的。)

She was as much to blame for the breakup of their marriage as he was. (他俩的婚姻破裂,夫妻双方都有责任。)

 

3. be responsible: if someone is responsible for an accident, crime etc., they caused it and they should be punished for it

例:

The police are trying to find out who was responsible. (警方正在努力查找肇事者。)

be responsible for

There is a reward for information leading to the arrest of the people responsible for the explosion. (谁能提供线索抓捕爆炸案元凶,就能获得奖赏。)

feel responsible (=think that something is your fault)

I knew the accident wasn't really my fault, but I can't help feeling a little responsible. (我知道这起事故不全是我的责任,但我难辞其咎。)

 

4. be at fault: if someone, especially a group of people or an organization, is at fault, they are responsible for something bad that has happened because they did not behave correctly or did not take enough care

例:

The accident report found both drivers to be at fault. (这起交通事故的报告表明,出事双方的司机都有责任。)

be at fault for doing something

With regard to the chaos after the earthquake, many people believe the government is at fault for not responding quickly enough. (地震后引起骚乱,大家认为这是因为政府应急不够迅速。)

 

5. only have yourself to blame: if you only have yourself to blame for something bad that has happened, it is your own fault that it happened and you should not feel sorry for yourself

例:

His wife's left him but he only has himself to blame. (他太太离开了他,但是他觉得这全是自己的错。)

only have yourself to blame for doing something

I've only got myself to blame for losing the race. (我输了比赛,非常自责。)

 

6. blame yourself: to think that it is your fault that something bad has happened, so that you feel very upset or ashamed

例:

You mustn't blame yourself—it wasn't your fault. (这不是你的错,你无需自责。)

Children sometimes feel responsible for their parents divorcing and blame themselves. (父母离婚,孩子有时会感到自责。)

blame yourself for

He never stopped blaming himself for his wife's death. (他一直对太太的死感到自责。)
