1. reassure: to make someone feel less worried, especially by saying something to comfort them

例:

I tried to reassure her by saying that the police would arrive soon. (我试着安慰她说:“警察很快就到。”)

reassure that

The company has reassured its workers that there will be no job losses this year. (公司安慰员工们说,今年内不会再裁员了。)

Experts reassured the public that the accident wouldn't happen again. (专家安慰广大民众说,这种事故不会再度发生。)

I tried to reassure myself that the children were safe. (我试着用孩子们都很安全来安慰自己。)

 

2. comfort: to make someone feel less upset by being kind to them and telling them not to worry

例:

Bill stroked her hair gently, trying to comfort her. (比尔轻轻地抚摸着她的头发,想安慰一下她。)

We did our best to comfort him, but he was obviously very upset. (我们已经尽力安慰他了,但他还是很不安。)

He longed to take her in his arms and comfort her. (他很想拥她入怀安慰她。)

We can comfort ourselves with the thought that the worst is over. (我们可以想着最大的坎都跨过去了,以此自我安慰。)

Mr White's father was last night being comforted by relatives. (昨晚,亲戚们都在安慰怀特先生的父亲。)

 

3. set/put somebody's mind at rest: to make someone feel less worried, especially by giving them information that shows they do not need to worry

备注:或者写作''set/put somebody's mind at ease''

例:

The doctor set my mind at rest by explaining exactly what effect the drug would have on me. (医生跟我详细解释了一下这个药的药效,好让我放心。)

Just to put your mind at ease, we will get a second opinion from a cardiac specialist. (你放心,我们会再咨询一下心脏科专家。)

You can put your mind at rest. (你放心。)

 

4. put somebody out of their misery: to tell someone something that they have been waiting anxiously to find out

备注:''put somebody out of their misery''常用于非正式的场合。''put out of its misery''原来用在动物身上,指“安乐死”;也可以用在人身上,指“安乐死”或者“不让他悬着心”。

例:

Come on Robyn! Put me out of my misery. Who won? (罗宾,别卖关子了,快告诉我。谁赢了?)

Eventually, we put him out of his misery and told him he'd passed. (最后,我们让他放了心,告诉他他已经通过了。)

 

5. cheer somebody up: to make someone feel happier when they are disappointed or sad about something

例:

Is there anything we can do to cheer you up? (我们能做点什么让你高兴点?)

She failed her test, so I'm taking her out to cheer her up. (她挂科了,所以我正要带她出去玩,想让她开心点。)

 

6. cheer up: say this to tell someone to stop feeling disappointed or sad and try to be more cheerful

备注:''cheer up''常用于口语中。

例:

Cheer up, Phil! It's only a game, and you can't win every time. (打起精神来,菲尔!只是场比赛而已,比赛就是有赢有输的。)

Cheer up! It's not the end of the world. (振作点,这又不是世界末日!)

 

7. it's all right/it's OK: say this to make someone feel calmer or make them stop crying, when they are very upset and worried about something

备注:''it's all right/it's OK''常用于口语中。

例:

It's all right, honey, I'm here now. (亲爱的,没事了,我现在就在你身边。)
