接着 上一讲 ，再讲一些关于“下雨”的表达方式。

（一）倾盆大雨

1. downpour : a short period of very heavy rain that starts suddenly

例：

a torrential downpour （倾盆大雨）

A sudden downpour sent us running for shelter. （突然下起了倾盆大雨，我们赶紧去找地方避雨。）

（二）毛毛雨

2. drizzle : use this to say that it is raining a little, with very small drops of rain 毛毛雨

备注： ''drizzle'' 的原意是“滴几滴（油等）液体在食物上”，如：

Drizzle the soy sauce over the chicken. （在鸡肉上滴几滴酱油。）

The vegetables were drizzled with olive oil. （菜里已经加了几滴橄榄油了。）

在表示“下雨”时， ''drizzle'' 引申为“毛毛雨”的意思。

例：

It was beginning to drizzle, so she pulled on her hood. （开始下毛毛雨了，她赶紧把卫衣的帽子戴上。）

it's drizzling （备注： ''it's drizzling'' 常用于口语中）

I think I'll walk to work—it's only drizzling. （只是下点毛毛雨，我还是走路去上班吧。）

补充：

① ''drizzle'' 做名词时，也可以表示类似的意思。

例：

A light drizzle was falling as I left the house. （我离开家的时候开始下毛毛雨。）

Yes, it's raining, but it's only a drizzle. （是在下雨，但只是毛毛雨。）

② ''drizzly'' 是 ''drizzle'' 的形容词形式，也可以表示类似的意思。

例：

It was a drizzly, gray weekend. （那是个天阴阴的、下着毛毛雨周末。）

3. it's sprinkling : use this to say that it is raining a little, usually when it will not last long （短时间的）毛毛雨

备注： ''sprinkle'' 的原意是“撒”，如：

Sprinkle the top with cheese. （在上面撒点芝士。）

He sprinkled the water on the plants. （他给植物浇水。）

I sprinkled cocoa over my latte. （我给自己的那杯拿铁上撒了可可粉。）  

在 ''it's sprinkling'' 中，引申为“毛毛雨”的意思。 ''it's sprinkling'' 常用于美式英语的口语中。

例：

"Is it raining out?" "It's just sprinkling." （ - 下雨了？ - 只是毛毛雨。）

4. light rain : a little rain 小雨

例：

Some light rain is likely in the Boston area. （波士顿地区可能会下小雨。）

（三）雨季

5. the rainy season/the monsoon : a time of the year when it rains a lot in hot countries, such as India and other southern Asian countries, from about April to October （季风）雨季  

例：

The rainy season is late this year. （今年的雨季推迟了。）

At this time of year, before the monsoon, the river is at its lowest. （每年雨季前的这个时候，河水的水位是一年中最低的。）

6. the rains : heavy rain that falls during a particular period in the year in tropical countries 雨季

例：

The farmers are waiting for the rains to come. （农民一直在等着雨季的到来。）

（四）雨和其它

7. hail : frozen rain that falls in the form of hailstones 冰雹

例：

The hail has destroyed many of the county's crops. （在该国很多地方，冰雹砸毁了很多农作物。）

Many cars were damaged by hail during the storm. （一场风暴下来，很多车都被冰雹砸坏了。）

heavy showers of rain and hail （夹着冰雹的强阵雨）

补充： ''hail'' 做动词时，也可以表示类似的意思。

例：

It's hailing outside. （外面在下冰雹。）
