这一讲主要介绍衣服或纸制品等“破破烂烂”。

1. shabby : clothes, books etc. that look shabby are no longer in good condition because they are old and have been used a lot

例：

John was standing in the doorway in his shabby blue suit. （约翰穿着破旧的蓝色西装站在门口。）

She wore shabby black clothes, with holes in the elbows of her jacket. （她身穿破旧不堪的黑色夹克，夹克的肘部都磨破了。）

His clothes were shabby and ill-fitting. （他的衣服又破又不合身。）

They lived in a shabby one-room apartment. （他们住的破公寓只有一个房间。）

Hugh's jacket was old and shabby. （休的夹克又破又旧。）

a shabby little restaurant （一家破旧的小餐馆）

2. worn : something such as material or cloth that is worn is thinner or weaker in particular parts as a result of being used a lot over a long time

例：

There was a worn Persian rug on the parquet floor. （镶木地板上铺着一张破旧的波斯小地毯。）

We used to cut up worn blankets to make sleeping bags for the children. （我们过去常把旧毯子剪了，给小孩做睡袋。）

The brake pads are very worn. （刹车片很旧了。）

3. ragged : clothes or books that are ragged are old and torn

例：

a ragged dress （破旧的裙子）

a boy in ragged jeans （穿着破旧牛仔裤的小男孩）

the notebook's ragged pages （笔记本上破旧的纸张）

4. tattered : clothes or books that are tattered are old and torn

例：

The old man clutched a tattered copy of "War and Peace". （老人紧抓着一本破旧的《战争与和平》。）

The shirt was now tattered beyond recognition. （这件衬衫都破到认不出来了。）

He produced a tattered envelope from his pocket. （他从口袋里掏出一个破旧的信封。）

5. threadbare : clothes, curtains, carpets etc. that are threadbare have become extremely thin and weak because they have been used so much

例：

She stood shivering in her threadbare dress. （她衣衫褴褛，站在那发抖。）

There was a clean but threadbare rug on the floor beside the bed. （床边的地板上铺着一块干净却很破旧的小地毯。）

6. tatty : clothes or books that are tatty are in bad condition and slightly torn because they have been used a lot

备注： ''tatty'' 常用于英式英语中。

例：

At the window of the cottage hang tatty, faded curtains. （小屋的窗户上都挂着破旧褪色的窗帘。）

Some of our textbooks are starting to look rather tatty. （有些课本看起来很破烂了。）

tatty jeans （破旧的牛仔裤）

7. battered : something that is battered is in bad condition and looks old especially because it has been used a lot

例：

He carried the same battered green journal with him on all his travels. （他一路上一直带着那本破旧的绿皮杂志。）

a battered old suitcase （破旧的行李箱）

8. dog-eared : a book, page, photograph etc. that is dog-eared is torn and bent at the edges because it has been used a lot

例：

Professor Brightly walked into the lecture hall with a pile of dog-eared notes under his arm. （布莱特利教授走进讲堂，腋下夹着一叠卷了边的笔记。）

On the other wall was a dog-eared calendar with faded pictures. （另一面墙上挂着一本褪色卷边的日历。）
