1. trick: a clever plan designed to make someone believe something that you want them to believe, or do something that you want them to do 比较高明的骗局

例:

He pretended to be sick as a trick to get her to visit him. (他假装生病,好让她来看自己。)

Don't send her any money - it might be a trick. (别给她寄钱,这可能是个骗局。)

a trick question (=a question that is cleverly designed to make someone give a wrong answer)

He refused to answer, suspecting they were asking him a trick question. (他怀疑他们给自己下套,所以拒绝回答这个问题。)

 

2. trap: a clever plan designed to harm someone, for example by making them go somewhere where they will be caught or attacked, or making them say something they will be punished for 陷阱,下套

例:

I didn't take the money with me, because I was worried it might be a trap. (我没有带钱来,因为我怕这是个陷阱。)

Sensing the lawyer's trap, he refused to answer. (他感觉到律师在给他下套,所以拒绝回答问题。)

 

3. deception: something that is said or done with the deliberate intention of deceiving people 故意欺骗

备注:''deception''常用于书面语中。

例:

Ann quickly saw through his lies and deceptions. (安一眼就看穿了他在撒谎。)

 

4. ruse: a trick, especially one that is amusing and not very serious 无伤大雅的小把戏、小手段

例:

It was just a ruse to get what I wanted! (这只是为了得到我想要的东西而耍的小手段而已。)

She asked to use the telephone as a ruse to enter the house. (她想借用电话,以此为借口进了房子。)

She tried to think of a ruse to get Paul out of the house. (她试图想个法子让保罗走出家门。)

 

5. hoax: a false warning about something dangerous, given especially to someone in an official position, for example the police谎报险情

例:

To everybody's great relief, the bomb scare turned out to be a hoax. (这起炸弹威胁最后只是个恶作剧,这让大家都松了一口气。)

 

6. con game/con: a trick to get someone's money or make someone do something 骗钱或骗人做事的骗局

备注:''con game/con''常用于非正式的场合。

例:

The two men were involved in an elaborate con to cheat investors out of their money. (这两个人精心策划了一个骗局,骗取投资人的钱财。)

Senior citizens are usually easy targets for con games. (老年人通常很容易被骗。)

 

7. put-up job: when something that happens is not what it seems to be, and is really an attempt to deceive people 被发现端倪的骗局

例:

Journalists suspected that the kidnapping was a put-up job. (记者怀疑这次绑架案是个骗局。)

 

8. scam: a clever and dishonest plan to get money 以高明的不实手段骗钱,诓骗

备注:''scam''常用于非正式的场合。

例:

The offer of a "free" vacation to Florida sounds like a scam to me. (让我免费去佛罗里达旅游,这听起来像骗局。)

 

9. diversion: a trick that is intended to take someone's attention away from what someone else is trying to do 分散某人的注意力以做坏事

例:

Some of the prisoners started a fight as a diversion to give the others time to escape. (一些囚犯放火引开警方注意力,让其他囚犯可以借机逃跑。)

 

10. decoy: a person or thing that is used to trick someone by taking their attention away from an illegal or criminal act 假目标,引诱

例:

You act as a decoy and we'll sneak out the back. (你去引开他们,我们从后面溜出去。)

The burglars started the fire as a decoy so that they could escape from police. (小偷放火引开警察,这样他们才能逃脱。)
